Abstract:

An analytical equation of state (EOS) developed by Ihm-Song-Mason (ISM) has been applied tocalculate some thermophysical properties of molten polymers including Poly (1-octene) (PO), Poly (vinylmethyl ether) (PVME), Poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC), and Poly (styrene) (PS). Three temperature-dependentparameters of the ISM EOS have been determined based on the alternative scaling constants, dispersiveenergy parameters between segments/monomers (ε) and segment diameter (σ). The ability of the proposedEOS has been checked by comparing the results with 547 literature data points for the specific volumes overtemperature from 311-557 K and pressure ranging from 0.1 up to 200 MPa. The average absolute deviation(AAD) of the calculated specific volumes from literature data was found to be 0.47%. The isothermalcompressibility coefficients, κT have also been predicted using ISM EOS. From 188 data points examined, the AAD of estimated κT was equal to 7.75%. Our calculations on the volumetric and thermodynamicproperties of studied polymers reproduce the literature data with reasonably good accuracy.

An Analytical Equation of State Extended to Copolymers

calculate some thermodynamic properties of molten polymers including specific volume and isothermal compressibility (S.M. Hoseini, Physical Chemistry & Electrochemistry, 2 (2014) 56-65). This work extended that EOS to predict the volumetric properties of some molten ethylene copolymers including ethylene/1-octene, ethylene/1-butene (xethylene equal to 0.8543 and 0.563), ethylene/propene. The ab...

An equation of state for argon

An analytical equation of state was applied to calculate the thermodynamic properties for argon. The equation of state is that of Song and Mason. It is based on a statistical-mechanical perturbationtheory of the hard convex bodies and can be written as fifth-order polynomial in the density. Thereexist three temperature-dependent parameters: the second virial coefficient, an effective molecularvo...

An Analytical Equation of State for Saturated Liquid Refrigerant Ternary Mixtures

In this work an analytical equation of state has been employed to calculate the PVT properties ofternary refrigerant mixtures. The theoretical EoS is that of Ihm, Song and Mason, which is based onstatistical-mechanical perturbation theory, and the two constants are enthalpy of vaporization ΔHvapand molar density ρnb, both at the normal boiling temperature. The following three temperaturedepende...

An Improved ISM Equation of State for Polar Fluids

We developed an equation of state (EOS) by Ihm, Song, and Mason (ISM) for polar fluids. The model consists of four parameters, namely, the second virial coefficient, an effective van der Waals co-volume, a scaling factor, and the reduced dipole moment. The second virial coefficient is calculated from a correlation that uses the heat of vaporization, and the liquid density at the normal boiling ...
